The exhibition, No One Thought of Sleep, featured a multi-media installation, Beyond the Surface, that combined video, sound, and sculpture. Building on recent underwater filming in the River Lee and Cork Harbour, the videos explore these ever-changing, interconnected waterways. The recordings evoke the feeling of being submerged and held beneath the surface, reflecting Spike Island’s function as a prison and its role in convict transportation. For me, the water symbolises the only route of escape from Spike Island, yet it carries its own unpredictable dangers, creating a tension between confinement and freedom.
